Anders als andere Betriebssysteme enthält Windows keinen Compiler für die Programmiersprache C++. Wer Programme aus dem Open-Source-Bereich neu übersetzen oder selbst ‘mal eben’ ein kleines Programm zusammenhacken will, ist also auf Fremdprodukte angewiesen. Der Borland C++ Compiler ist die Kommandozeilenversion des im populären C++-Builder enthaltenen Compilers und wird vom Hersteller kostenlos zur Verfügung gestellt.
